Module Synopsis

ACCT20051 Accounting Information for Decision Making
The aims of this course are to give people without an accounting background: a working knowledge of recording processes used by accountants; an understanding of the information that is provided by an accounting information system; an insight into the managerial problems that are based on accounting information; an introduction to utilising accounting information for problem solving and a chance to apply the knowledge learned to actual case studies. Topics include: introduction to accounting; financial statement analysis; how accounting information is recorded - the concepts behind accounting; how accounting information is recorded - recording the information, and raising capital; accounting and the manufacturing sector; cost behaviour; product costing systems; decision making - short term; decision making - long term; responsibility accounting; budgeting and budgeting - performance evaluation and designing a management accounting system.

MGMT20124 People, Work & Organisations
This course will look critically at the role of individuals, groups and managers in the performance outcomes of organisations in a dynamic environment. The role of individual and group behaviour on performance will be examined. Theoretical underpinnings of management and organisational theory will also be addressed. Topics will include emotions, values, attitudes, motivation, leadership, communication, group dynamics, management roles, strategic decision-making and structure.

MRKT20019 Marketing Management
This course covers marketing from the point of view of the marketing manager. It defines marketing, how the marketing process works, and the importance of marketing as a central function of organisation effort in an increasingly complex and competitive business environment. The critical importance of the marketing plan is emphasised. The major tools and techniques used by modern professional marketers are covered. The course also includes the marketing virtues of taking a customer focus and of practising marketing that is in the best long term interests of consumers.

MGMT20085 Operational Analysis and Effectiveness
This course delineates and defines operations management, and places it in context with other areas of management. Students will apply the systems approach to the management of operations; investigate the areas of systems analysis, operations research, economics and industrial engineering having application in operations management; and be able to apply methods to problem areas of operations management.

ECON20023 Economics for Business
This course encompasses a broad ranging introduction to economic theory and analysis as well as a study of some applications of economics to economic systems and to enterprises. Students will be required to study macroeconomics (how an economy works as a whole) and microeconomics (how individual businesses and sectors operate). Students will also be required to gain some understanding of why institutions are very important in an economy, and how internal and international trade creates economic wealth. Key goals in the course will be to raise your awareness of the importance of economic systems, introduce you to the different fields of economic theory that are relevant to business, and develop some analytical skills.

FINC2008 International Finance
This course covers a range of concepts and their application to international finance. The concepts include those encountered in foreign exchange markets, international parity pricing, foreign exchange rate determination, foreign exposure, cost of capital, financial structures, capital flows, international taxes, acquisitions and mergers, portfolio management, working capital management and international trade finance. This course is research and analytically based.

LAWS20038 International Business Law
This course is primarily directed at introducing managers to the distinguishing features of international business transactions as opposed to domestic transactions. As such it focuses on a consideration of international business law and the importance of this in international trade and business in the world market.

HRMT20022 HRM in the Global Environment
The entire HR field has experienced tremendous change in the past decade. The global economy affects us all, no matter the size of the organisation. HR professionals need to recognise that globalisation is the defining political and economic force in the world today, requiring new ways of thinking and responding. This course focuses on skills development and mastery of the necessary knowledge to be successful in the worldwide marketplace. The course examines the various external business and cultural influences and environments in the Asia Pacific region to demonstrate the differing human resources policies and practices in those economies. This is extended to show how the economic underpinning of these labour markets, and the HR responses to the national labour markets have been institutionalised.

MRKT20018 Global Marketing
This course focuses on the management skills, techniques and strategies needed to incorporate the marketing concept into the framework of world markets. Students will learn how to evaluate overseas marketing within a conceptual framework to form a basis for business and marketing decisions, to manage the economic, cultural and physical factors involved, and to plan, organise, develop and monitor international markets.

HRMT20007 Human Resource Management
This course will concentrate on the theory and practice of effective Human Resources Management. Many organisations today are facing a crisis in productivity and international trade competition that is threatening their very survival. Coupled with this challenge is the demand that organisations deliver an increased quality of work life to employees and comply with an intricate and complex set of laws, regulations and court decisions. The aim of this course is to explore the various HRM functions of planning, staffing and appraising, compensating, improving, establishing and maintaining, and to fully appreciate their interrelationship and impact on the achievement of organisational objectives, strategies and long term economic survival.

MGMT29002 Strategic Integration 1
This capstone strategy course is designed to further develop the critical evaluation, analytical and research skills that students have developed throughout their degree program. The course requires students to work in teams on various issues and cases in strategy, with a strong focus on the execution of strategy.

MGMT20112 Strategy Development and Initiatives
This course is designed to develop the ability of students to evaluate situations in organisations from a strategic viewpoint. The course presents tools and techniques for strategic analysis, investigates development of strategic alternatives and decision-making, and covers issues in strategy implementation and evaluation.
